Sacred ceremony perhaps? To the christians and catholics... to be united by god.
For the rest of us...At least it's recognised by the law :) Now that everything's about certificates.

marriage.. binds. legally or otherwise; at the very least it brings pple(in-laws) into your social network. sometimes these ties bind, when everything else fails.
sometime these ties commit.
